Top economist vs leading economist

A friend referred to an economist he happened to agree with as a “top economist.” I thought that was a little self-serving so I asked him the difference between a top economist and a leading economist.

A top economist is an economist that happens near the top. For example, Robert Lucas was a top economist when he said macro had been solved. Ok, fair.

A leading economist is any male economist who goes on Dancing with the Stars.
